Big Bend Falls

We had a great hike on Sunday with the three dogs. With all the rainfall in the area recently the waterfall was higher than I had ever seen it and louder than anything I have heard on the river. I believe the river was running somewhere between 2 or 3.
Big Bend Falls is an easy one to find, but a difficult one to observe close up. Follow these directions and you will definitely have an adventure and a great experience.
From Walhalla, SC proceed north on Hwy 28. About 8 miles north of Walhalla veer to the right onto Hwy 107. Proceed 8 or 9 miles until you reach Cherry Hill Campground.

Across from Cherry Hill Campground is Big Bend Road. Take a left on this dirt road (SUV or truck recommended) and drive approximately 3 to 4 miles to the very end. Park here and proceed on foot. There will be a trail directly ahead at the end of the parking lot. You will notice a black registration box about 50 feet into the trail. No need to register, these are old boxes that are no longer used.

Stay straight down this steep trail until you reach a 4 way intersection. The picture below has the trail you are coming down on the right hand side and the Foothills Trail going upstream is in the left side of the picture.
At the 4 way intersection take the far left trail as seen below and look for the white blazes designating the Foothills Trail.
Along the way there are numerous rock outcroppings that offer great views of the river.

After hiking for 1/2 of a mile you will pass 2 switchbacks. After another 1/4 mile there will be another set of switchbacks. At this set of switchbacks you will hear Big Bend Falls.
Coming down this set of steps and large boulder you will see a trail through the mountain laurel and rhododendron on your right. There are actually two trails here, one leads off to the right and looks easy, don't take it. It gets you above the falls without the best view. Take the left trail and shimmy or scoot yourself down the trail using the branches to steady yourself. You are going to reach a point where there is a small drop off.
Be careful and this is the view you will be rewarded with...

This is the first time I have ever seen this volume of water at Big Bend. Usually it is a nice quiet pool and the swimming here is great. I plan to upload another video when the water level drops and I get the chance to hike it again. But for now enjoy the roar of the falls...

What I want to offer...

I have been wanting to start a blog for a while now and being from the SC upstate and an avid hiker, I decided to showcase the waterfalls in the area. I will highlight at least one waterfall a month with a driving route and directions, the length and location of the hike and a description of the waterfall as well as pictures.

I hope you enjoy my descriptions and pictures.
